Short Notes... A heavy snow in Diamond Springs seems to cause a hit and run, but there are darker deceptions that threaten the people of Montgomery County. Sharyn is battling the County Commission and a personal challenge after breaking up with Medical Examiner Nick Thomopolis. Book Details: Thomas Bouregy and
Co.
Sheriff Sharyn Howard looked down at the grave after the mourners and the burial crew was gone. A brisk wind blew off of Diamond Mountain scattering the autumn leaves around her feet, a portent of the winter to come. The granite grave marker that would honor the fallen Diamond Springs’ police officer buried here wasn’t ready yet. Every man and women in the county had donated for it. She’d seen Bobby Bradley working on the chunk of cold gray stone. Officer David Matthews died in the performance of his duties. He died a man of honor and valor. She still found it hard to believe David was gone. They’d graduated high school together. He’d been her deputy for years before he joined the town’s police force. During that time he was everything from a thorn in her side to a pain in her neck. She’d been happy to see him go to the new police department. She would never forget him telling her he wanted her to be proud of him as he lay dying. He didn’t deserve to die. She felt responsible. It was partly her investigation into the good old boy network that ran Montgomery County and Diamond Springs and partly slipshod work from the FBI that got him killed. She heard footsteps approaching and glanced up, the wind tugging at her flat brimmed sheriff’s hat. “What do you want?” FBI Agent Brewster, the man she blamed more than herself for David’s death, looked out over the patchwork quilt of fall color that lay sprawled beneath the mountain. In the heart of it was Diamond Lake, sparkling like a sapphire in the sun. “Sheriff, I know a way we can get these men. Are you game?” After David’s death, after everything that had happened, she knew she should say no. But her heart wanted vengeance. “What do you have in mind?”
