Cover Story...
Bell’s Creek Campground has remained empty since a young girl was
murdered there twenty-five years ago. It wasn’t the first time tragedy
struck the area locals call Satan’s Campground. The girl’s killer was
never found but an old suitcase, buried in the dirt, might finally give up
the secret. The camp is being re-opened this spring by the state,
instigated by Kristie Howard. Busloads of underprivileged children are
ready to visit. But a dark presence still lurks there.

The cover art design and illustration of "For The Last Time" by Tess Anson (DSG)
Sheriff Sharyn Howard is a closet romance reader. Sources... FOR THE LAST TIME is the fifth book in the Sharyn Howard mystery series. It is not necessary to read the others to fully enjoy FOR THE LAST TIME, although I know I'll be picking up the previous books to see where it all began. If you like a nice quiet mystery with deftly drawn characters and an intriguing plot, you won't want to miss FOR THE LAST TIME.Terrie Figueroa for Romance Reviews Today
Authors Jim and Joyce Lavene create a marvelously multi-layered plot certain to satisfy mystery lovers in FOR THE LAST TIME. Sharyn struggles with the decision to run for reelection or to take the bar and practice as a lawyer. Her personal life adds delicious complications with the addition of the growing attraction to Nick Thomopolis, the medical examiner. Further, she refuses to yield to the politics wielded by her mother's fiancé, state senator Caison Talbot and his cronies. The result is a woman whose characters grows and strengthens with each addition to this popular mystery series. The strength of this talented writing duo, combined with a fascinating plot replete with twists and a rich understanding of human nature round out this terrific novel, making it come very highly recommended. “I could
only find two of the counselors that were from local areas. One of them
graduated from Diamond Springs High School. The other came from Indian
Creek on the other side of the mountains. The other two we found yesterday
were from Duke and State. I spoke with the counselor who was from Duke
this morning. She couldn’t think of anything she could add to what we
already know. But the counselor from State recalled that there were
footprints in the ground outside the cabin that morning.” “What kind
of footprints?” Ernie wondered, sitting forward in his chair. “Cloven
ones,” Cari said, wincing. “The two local counselors moved away and I
haven’t been able to find them yet. The fifth counselor was a woman
named Betsy Peterson who had dropped out of college. They have no records
for her after that.” “She dropped
out after the murder?” Ed wondered. “No, before.
I’ll keep trying those other two numbers.” “Wait a
minute,” Sharyn said quickly. “Betsy Peterson?” “Yes.”
Cari looked at Joe and Ernie for help. “EJP. The
initials on the locket in the suitcase. Betsy is short for Elizabeth. See
what you else you can find out about her, Cari.” “There
wasn’t anything, Sheriff.” The other woman shrugged. “She signed on
as a counselor but dropped out of school before the murder. I’m not even
sure if she was there.” “Find
out,” Sharyn told her. “Ernie, get on the phone with the counselors
you’ve talked to. Find out if they remember this Betsy Peterson. You,
too, Joe.” “Sheriff! I
can’t drink anymore tea!” “Do it on
the phone then, Joe. Ernie, call the Liston’s and see if they remember a
girl by that name at the camp. And I hate to ask but could you call my
Aunt Selma?” Ernie nodded.
“You think Rebecca might have known Betsy Peterson?” “I think we
finally have a place to start. I’m going back out to the campground to
meet John Schmidt. He’s going to take a look at the cabin where the girl
was killed. I’m hoping he might be able to shore it up so we can get in
there safely and take a look around.”
